Recovery Run

Trail run: 4.5 miles in 41 minutes
Dog run: 1 mile @ ~10 minutes
Homework: 20 minutes

Today was a recovery run day, but I had my heart set on trails. I have a super hilly ass kicking 10k in a few months, and it's been on my mind recently. So, hilly trail it was! And it was fabulous.

As soon as I got home I grabbed the dog and tacked on another slower mile to get this walk in.

It made me think about what I consider exercise. For me, walking doesn't count. Sure, maybe if I were rehabbing a broken foot, or morbidly obese, or had a double amputation. But I'm a person, and people walk. It's part of every day life. Even spending all day walking around the fair. That's LIFE, that's not exercise.

  1. I totally agree. For me, walking is how I get places. Not exactly legit cardio.....

  4. I think it depends on how fast you walk. But I agreee walking for fitness and walking because you walked the dog are walking different things.

Of course at the end of July I am going to start WALKING in training for the SGK 3-Day walk, ya know the one where you walk 60 miles in 3 days. Sure my fitness level won't be the same as when I am training for a half, but it will still be workout just at a different intesity.

  5. I've never considered walking exercise either. The wife does, and it drives me crazy. No, I will not waste my time walking in circles with you.

  6. I walk for exercise. I can't run for an hour, but I can walk for an hour - I figure that's better than nothing. Hopefully after I lose some weight that won't be the case.

  7. So when I get up to walk to the vending machine for Doritos that isn't exercise? Or when I walk to go get a Big Gulp of Mountain Dew?

**for the record, we don't even have a vending machine and I've never tasted Mountain Dew.

Walking is nice. It is peaceful. It doesn't make me sweat - unless it is super hot outside, but that's not effort making me sweat. So for me, walking doesn't count either. However, with that said, I usually walk for 30 seconds or so here and there during my runs. THEN it counts just because I said so.
