Cracked.com, one of the funniest websites out there these days, has a hilarious article, 6 Fitness Tips Everyone's Heard (That Don't Work at All) #6. You MUST Eat Breakfast. When subjects were asked to skip breakfast, and even both breakfast and lunch, they actually ended up eating the same or fewer calories than when they'd been eating breakfast.
#5. You Must Get Your BMI Down. You could be 200 pounds of muscle or 200 pounds of fat (give or take some bones and blood or something) and BMI wouldn't know the difference.#4. Barefoot Running is Best. How can people be so stubbornly sure that barefoot running is the only way for humans to run? There must be a lot of really good research on it, I guess. Except there isn't.
#3. P90X/Muscle Confusion is a Revolutionary Way to Get in Shape. But no, muscles are not people, and they don't get bored. If you're squatting 40 pounds (yes that's me, I'm a weakling) for three sets of 15 reps every single time, then sure, they'll become accustomed to that exact exercise and you'll stop seeing gains after a while. But all you have to do to fix that is
lift more weight or change the number of reps or sets, as seen in every single workout program ever. To your muscles, that's new and exciting enough. You don't have to do an entirely different new kind of squat to entertain/shock your jaded muscles. They're muscles, not the Internet.
#2. Want a Snack? Eat Carrots or Celery Instead of a Candy Bar! This advice depends on the assumption that everyone would psychologically accept the celery as a treat when they crave treats. The dirty truth is that sometimes when people want chips, they want goddamn chips. I don't want no carrot sticks or lightly salted fat-free popcorn.
#1. Shed Pounds By Drinking Lots of Water! As
Scientific American reports
the whole idea seems to stem from a misunderstanding of a 1945 study which recommended that amount of water for the average person. What researchers in that study understood, and people parroting their conclusions don't, is that unless your diet consists wholly of dehydrated biscuits,
food also contains water.
This is only a quick summary of the article.
Go to their site to read the whole thing in its hilarity. Now, on to the discussion.
I'm in pretty much full agreement with their assessments of items 6-3. #2 just seems like a petty grudge written by someone who wants to justify eating crappy food. There's no mention of studies done or anything. Just bitterness. Personally, my desire to snack comes mostly from a desire to shove something, anything in my mouth. You're a pervert. I know what you're thinking.
#1. I don't know. I feel better when I drink a crap ton of water. I eat less when I pound a glass of water beforehand. Probably because there's less room in my stomach, and I tend to overeat anyway.
Yes, intelligent discussion going on here.
Anyway, the article is funny, and the points are somewhat interesting. Check it out.
Are there any points you strongly agree with or disagree with?
hahahaha i love you. i am so glad you debunked so many myths and mysteries.
ReplyDeleteI think it's all individual. I think drinking water is really important...but sometimes I think people go overboard with thinking a gallon of water everyday on top of fruits and veggies and any other beverages they might consume is necessary.
ReplyDeleteI am in agreement with you actually. I know that I FEEL different when I slack on the water consumption. That article did make me want a candy bar though. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteIf I am really really craving something bad for me, I just eat it. And I don't feel guilty about it.
ReplyDeleteAnd I absolutely disagree with #4 because I am not tough enough to do it and I'm jealous of everyone who can.
I agree with you on the water part. I feel so much better when I have had a lot of water to drink. I have also heard that your body uses the feeling of hunger to tell you it's thirsty at times. So there are times that you could actually just need a drink of water rather than food. I have no idea if that is valid...but it sounds good, right??
ReplyDeleteI agree with the water comsuption. I have increased my water by not drinking soda and I can tell a huge difference.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I have issues with the BMI.... I am 5'4 160 lb size 10 or 8 sometimes haha... and my BMI says I am obese. What the heck. But the doc says I am in perfect health... So Confusing!
I disagree with #6, Breakfast is a very important part of the day. I know if I don't eat breakfast I feel like crap, or if I don't eat enough I get hungry and eat junk.
ReplyDeleteI HATE the BMI. I still dread going to the doctor because of it. Years ago the girl put my height in shorter than I am. I mean if you want my height maybe wait for me to raise my head and actually stand up. And then the scale seriously did not match any other scale I stepped on - and I was obsessive about it. She enters this info and it tells me I should weigh 119 pounds and that I am overweight. Seriously, I was NOT happy.
ReplyDeleteI read somewhere once that at the peak of his career Michael Jordan was obese according to the BMI. So obviously it is stupid. And I'm almost like Mike, if I could be like Mike ... so that means I'm just all muscle and not fat. Ugh - I should stop now. I could rant about my hatred for it forever!
Celery and I have never met. We don't have plans of meeting. Why punish me for wanting a little snack. But I'm actually not a snacker, so I don't really worry about.
Where are my chips??
The list is pretty funny! I need breakfast, though I workout before I eat most days and I NEED water, but I'm pretty sure those are personal preferences not necessities.
ReplyDeleteI agree-bring on the chips!!! Yay for Cheetos!
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh I love that. I am actually HUNGRIER when I eat breakfast than when I don't (but I love breakfast so always eat it). I agree with you on the water thing though. I feel better and don't eat as much when I've had a good amount of it.
ReplyDeleteI'm with Tara ... I eat breakfast - but it always does seem to make me hungrier. I don't get it!
ReplyDeleteI agree with Tara and Fruitfly, breakfast makes me hungrier!
ReplyDeleteBut I always thought it was also a ploy by cereal marketing folks to get me to eat more cereal as part as a balanced breakfast.
The water thing always bugs me. I DO feel better when I drink more water, but I am not on board with the whole "when you feel thirsty that means you are already dehydrated" concept. If that's the case, then why am I peeing so often? Obviously I'm NOT dehydrated. But then again, drinking water makes me feel better...so I just don't know.
ReplyDeleteGreat post! I tend to skip breakfast at the weekends and in the coming weeks will be working towards Intermittent Fasting - looking forward to it!
ReplyDeleteI also feel better when I drink a lot of water - my body feels so sluggish if I'm slacking.
I totally agree with you about treats. If I want a treat, I don't want a bowl of berries with splenda. Berries are great, but they are NOT dessert.
ReplyDeleteI couldn't agree more with ya on the treat thing. There are times when I just want to munch and shove food into my mouth. Not that I'm hungry just feel like a snack. Celery is has never been nor will it ever be an acceptable "snack". Eww!
ReplyDeleteThank you for #4! If we had grown up in a society that didn't put so much emphasis on footwear (like certain tribes in South America or Africa), than this would be true. In a country where you can buy newborns Nikes, (most of) our feet have grown accustomed to padding!
ReplyDeleteI love cracked! I'm not sure I really disagree with any of these, although I think barefoot running may have potential for some people. We aren't all the same, so it would make sense that some people do better barefoot and some people do better in certain shoes.
ReplyDelete#5 for sure... I was just using a BMI calculator online the other day, but then (in my infinite wisdom) starting thinking about body builders and how this whole BMI thing must be crap. There are also plenty of skinny people who are completely unhealthy.
ReplyDeleteI think it is different for every person -
ReplyDelete#6 - I HAVE to eat daily or I will overeat at lunch
#5 - BMI is so subjective - i look at is a tool but not the rule
#4 - ehh no comment
#3 - I love P90X - it works and it works for people who want to lose weight without going somewhere. I def saw results when I did it, now if only I had time to stick with it for 90 days. LOL
#2 - snacks are important and yes there are some better then others - but for weight loss or fuel skip the chips or go with 100 calorie alternatives
#1 - I have to drink water and lots of it. if not I retain water bad! When I say a lot I typically drink at least 100oz a day - more on running days.
