Three Things Thursday

1. I signed up for the Run 4 Kids 24 Hour Ultramarathon on March 18th and 19th. It's around a high school track. No, seriously. This is a terrible idea. I have no idea what I'm getting in to. And I'm very excited. And terrified. TERRIFIED. But, I announced it to the world, so I have to do it. Any advice?

2. I skipped the Bachelor Workout again. My best friend works a busy schedule in the entertainment industry, so I'm at the whim of her boss's whims. We're tentatively rescheduled for Saturday. I'm a little sad, because it means I have to avoid certain websites, but it's worth it to get to have a fun workout with two of my favorite people.

3. I'm been eating the crap out of dried fruit. We got a dehydrator for the wedding, and man, it's so easy to slice up fruit and throw it in the dehydrator overnight. My favorites right now are slightly under ripe plums, pineapple, and granny smith apples. I don't know why dried fruit is so much easier to eat than regular fruit. Probably the crunch factor. I like my food to crunch.

How is your Thursday?

  1. No way, Rose! You signed up for a 24 hour race around a track!?
    Have you lost your marbles??

I'm kidding, it will be awesome and completely memorable. I would NEVER be able to do a race like that. It takes some serious mental strength. You are a ninja.

  2. The funny thing is, earlier in the week some other blogger was talking about indoor marathons and I made a comment about never wanting to run that far around a track.

    Whoops.

I'm trying to focus on the fact that my support crew will always be close, and it will be super easy to zone out without worrying about tripping, and I can break everything down into small numbers. I need to do 17 track loops an hour to stay on pace. That means each straight away can take a full minute. That's fiiiiiine.

  3. Oh man, dried fruit. My pancreas hates me..

Read this for a 24hr track race report
    http://chrismcpeake.blogspot.com/2010/10/ottawa-24-hours-on-track-race-report.html

I think you're going to have to do some looooong dreadmill training sessions to train some mental toughness!

And thanks for the awesome comment on the vegan thing. Let me just say, on behalf of all herbivores out there (I am, or course, not at all entitled to speak for everyone, but whatever!): thank you for making proper meals for us, and not side-dishes!

Also, thank you for reminding me that this is my life, my body, and my training, and ultimately, I can do whatever the hell I want with it! I have a serious martyr complex I think. But I am going a bit carb crazy over here. I know I don't feel all that great. It's good to be reminded that that is an important consideration..

Seriously, a 24 hour track race!?!?

  4. Okay, that race report didn't sound too bad.

    My current plan involves:
    -books on tape
    -really really good music mixes
    -podcasts
    -excellent company

My husband is staying the full 24 hours, because he has to. I'm set it up so my best friends will stagger themselves throughout the day. The two hardest times will be overnight, where my hilarious brother will be keeping me company, and the last 4-5 hours. I don't have anyone for that part yet, but I still have seven weeks.

It is going to be nuts. I'm not sure I want to train for it. It might be better to not know how terrible it's going to be to run that long, and just nut up and do it. We'll see.

  5. Wow.
I don't even know what to say. I'm reading about your 24 hours race. This sounds like something I'd do .... NOT this race, but just see something and sign up - THEN realize I don't know what I'm getting myself into!

    You run. I'll sleep.

  6. If you have people there staggering(!) through with support then that sounds like it will break it up into chunks, which has to help. Plus they will hopefully distract you a bit! Do you have a distance goal in mind, or you just want to run the full 24hrs?

Re. the vegan thing, you are so right that it is a physical versus an emotional trade off. I am really struggling with deciding which I should prioritise though. I feel selfish if I pick my training.. Still, thanks for setting it up that way. It helps to clarify a lot of how I feel right now, and how I need to approach it if I want to resolve this mental BS!

ps -- I love bodybuilders. You're right, they are awesomely funny!

  7. The key is telling everyone you know, so you HAVE to do it.

And pretending like you didn't sign up so it's a SURPRISE when it's finally time.

  8. I have sort of distance goals. I have NO IDEA what to expect.

If I don't get injured, my goals are:

50 miles. This, alone, is bragging rights. "I ran a 50 mile race." I would leave off the "at a 2mph pace" part. Still brag worthy.

75 miles. This seems reasonable. Like, unless I have to crawl half the laps, I should be able to do it.

100 miles. Would be awesome. But it's in the upper reaches of possible, because, um, that's a lot of miles, and I have no idea what my body will do. It's 4 miles an hour. 17 laps per hour. about 1 per per straight away. It's a brisk walk the whole time. But, I know I can jog for at least 26 miles. I don't know. I don't want to be all "I WILL RUN 100 MILES." And then fail. So, it's like, a fantasy goal.

But, yeah, anything over 50 miles is awesome, braggable, etc.

podcasts, books on tape, etc good luck!

  10. Very cool! You'll have lots of fun! Think of all the people you can talk to as no one will be able to escape you - round and round you go, how far you'll go, nobody knows :-)
Have a contest to see who can guess closest to your final mileage.

I love dried pineapple. When we were kids my parents made a fruit drier and we loved dried granny smiths!

  11. I love the idea of a "guess the distance" contest. I'll have to think about the best prize.

  17. Holy crap. I can't even wrap my head around the thought of running in circles for an ENTIRE DAY.

  18. @Chris the Follow button should be at the top left of the screen when you scroll to the very top.

@Bob The scariest part is there is another 24 hour race in May. I have strict instructions not to sign up for it until I get this one out of the way.

@Pam, um, neither can I. I'm trying not to think about it.
